Great comments and I would like to add a bit of advice to future first timers. At Annual ALA has a program called ALA Ambassadors using more experienced members to provide guidance to new attendees. You will find an Ambassadors booth somewhere in the registration area and another in the exhibit hall. Also, Ambassadors have a ribbon on our name tags to identify us so if you see one of us anywhere feel free to ask a question. Stop by either booth with questions and to sign up for the Dine Around for a series of Dutch treat dinner at a restaurant in the area. This is a great way to meet others and enjoy a good meal and good conversation. Even if it is not your first conference stop by if you have a question or to join one of the Dine Around groups.

These are really good ideas I wish someone had told me before my first conference, because I, too, had to learn some of these by trial and error. The only thing I can really think to add is to be sure to bring a pocket-sized notepad (if you're not carrying a PDA, that is). That way you can always be ready to jot down a phone number, the title of a book someone is talking about, or the name of that Very Important Librarian!
