Counting the Days

Linda W Braun | Conference, YALSA Info. | Friday, May 15th, 2009

It’s just a week until advanced registration for ALA Annual closes and if you haven’t registered yet there is no better time than now. YALSA has a great list of events you’ll want to think about registering for including:

  • Genre Galaxy is YALSA’s preconference program on Friday, July 10. Registrants for the preconference will get to hear great authors talk about genre literature. Authors on the schedule include Holly Black, Cecil Castellucci, and David Lubar.
  • What TO Wear is YALSA’s first-ever happy hour and fashion show. It’s the perfect way to start the conference. Join Project Runway season 4 contestant Steven Rosengard and YALSA friends for a couple of hours of fashion, conversation, and mingling. Several YALSA members have agreed to walk the runway where Steven Rosengard will act as MC and provide fashion tips. The What TO Wear event will also be your chance to join YALSA’s first-ever Tweetup. You can meet Twitter friends that you know and don’t know over drinks and fashion. Your ticket to What TO Wear will also be a ticket for a drink at the event.
  • Margaret Edwards Lunch - Wouldn’t it be great to have lunch with Laurie Halse Anderson? If you sign-up for the Margaret Edwards Lunch on Saturday, July 11, you can celebrate the work of Halse Anderson who is the winner of this year’s Margaret Edwards Award.
  • Morris Award Presentation & Coffee Klatch – On Sunday, July 12, be a part of the first ever William Morris Award celebration and have a chance to talk with authors during YALSA’s annual Coffee Klatch. The morning will start with the presentation of the Morris Award to Elizabeth C. Bunce for her book A Curse Dark as Gold. Following the Award presentation, participants will take part in YALSA’s very own version of speed dating. In this version you get to meet a host of authors over approximately 60 minutes.
  • Printz Award Program and Reception – On Monday evening, July 13, you can join others to celebrate the winners of this year’s Michael L. Printz Award. The evening begins with speeches from the winning and honor book authors and then is followed by a reception where those in attendance get to mingle with friends, colleagues, and authors.

That’s just a list of ticketed events to look forward to. YALSA also is planning a wide-variety of non-ticketed programs for attendees including a program on teen advisory groups and library leadership, sex in teen literature, and creativity in teen programming.

Don’t forget you can save money by taking part in ALA’s advanced registration. Once you register you can sign-up for the ticketed events in which you are interested. You can find out more about all of YALSA’s events at Annual on the YALSA wiki.
