Getting Involved in YALSA: Interest & Discussion Groups

Did you know that YALSA sponsors 11 interest and discussion groups on topics from anime to intellectual freedom and from serving teens in large urban populations to serving older teens? These groups are a great way to get involved in the Association. They provide opportunities to connect with peers in order to discuss topics of interest, and don’t require face-to-face attendance at Midwinter Meeting or Annual Conference.

Starting tomorrow, and continuing through the next seven days, conveners of several of YALSA’s interest and discussion groups will post about their groups to let members know about the work of the group and how to get involved. Each interest and discussion group has a space on ALA Connect so that they can have real-time chats, threaded discussions, and work on documents all within their Connect space.

Conveners will also use their posts to put out a call for convener nominations. (Nominations for conveners will be open through May 3.) YALSA interest and discussion groups each have a convener, or two co-conveners, who facilitate the work of the group for a year. Conveners are elected just before Annual (convener elections this year will be held the week of May 24.), start their work just after Annual, and continue through Annual of the next year. When you read about each of the groups you might consider if you are interested in being a convener, or co-convener. If you are interested, you can submit your name to the current group convener. Convener contact information is available on the YALSA website.

The schedule of posts is below. You might want to make sure to check-in to read posts on a topic of particular interest, although reading all of the posts is definitely a great way to learn about the wide-range of topics covered by the interest and discussion groups.

  • Tuesday, April 6, Student Interest Group
  • Wednesday, April 7, Technology for Young Adults and Serving Teens in Large Urban Populations
  • Thursday, April 8, Intellectual Freedom, Serving Older Teens, and Anime
  • Friday, April 9, Partnerships Advocating for Teens and Professional Development
  • Saturday, April 10, Youth Participation
  • Sunday, April 11, TAGs
  • Monday, April 12, Outreach to Teens with Special Needs

YALSA’s interest and discussion groups might be the perfect way for you to get involved in the Association. You can join a group at any time. Contact the current convener of a group that sounds interesting to get started.
