Summer Learning for Library Staff Working with Teens – YALSA Has You Covered

drawing of raised hands of different colors The official start of summer is four weeks away but it’s definitely not too early to plan what your going to take part in for professional learning over the summer months. YALSA’s webinars, self-paced eLearning, Snack Breaks, and Annual Conference programs might be just right for your summer learning needs.

Creative Youth Development: a Three Part Series

In June, July, and August YALSA’s monthly webinars have a singular focus, Creative Youth Development (CYD). Each webinar brings together teen library staff, IMLS staff, and staff of the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards to talk about what CYD is, how it can be integrated into library programs and services for and with teens, and how to secure funds for CYD library activities. The webinars take place on the third Thursday of each month at 2PM Eastern. Members can reserve a seat (it’s free) for each of the webinars. Non-members can purchase the webinar within 24 hours of the live recording. Groups may purchase seats to attend the live session. Learn more about the series and how to access the content on the YALSA website.

Self-paced eLearning

Do you often want to take an online class but just don’t have the time to participate within a specific set of weeks and hours? Do you like to learn at your own pace? If you answered “yes” to either of those questions then YALSA’s brand new Self-Paced eLearning is something you want to check out. Launched earlier this spring, these new eLearning bundles are collections of YALSA’s most popular webinars and selected YALS articles organized into a mini-curriculum on topics that library staff can learn about in manageable pieces of time. Each bundle includes questions to think about while working with the material and provides a framework for each topic to help library staff frame their learning. Bundles are available for purchase either by individuals or groups.

YALSA Snack Breaks

YALSA’s collection of mind-sized bite videos continues to grow with the newest entry: a ten minute clip from the webinar Repair the Harm: Restorative Approaches to Behavior Management in Libraries.

The full Snack Break playlist is on YouTube and new videos are added every month.

YALSA @ Annual Conference

YALSA’s Snack Break on STEM and Youth Voice is the perfect preview of some of what YALSA has planned for Annual Conference 2017 in Chicago. The Snack Break looks at what teens have to say about the work they are doing with the Kitsap Regional Library as a part of the Library’s teen internship program. Annual Conference attendees can learn more about the KRL program at “Start Here: Achieving High Impact through Teen Internships and Volunteering” which will take place on Sunday, June 25 from 4:30-5:30pm, at the Convention Center in room W184a.
