Explore Libraries at the 2018 ALA Annual Conference: The New Orleans Public Library Main Library and Best Buy Teen Tech Center

The New Orleans Public Library Main Library, located in the Central Business District at 219 Loyola Avenue, is worth a visit during your conference down time. This mid-century modern library opened in 1958 and was designed by Curtis and Davis Architects and Engineers, the same firm that designed the Superdome. The first floor houses the adult collections and computers, and just received a facelift. The second floor houses the library’s youth services division and the brand new Best Buy Teen Tech Center. The third floor holds the city archives and special collections.

The Best Buy Teen Tech Center is funded by Best Buy and the Clubhouse Network, a collaboration with the MIT Media Lab. By design, Best Buy Teen Tech Centers foster interest based-learning using new technology with the support from peer and adult mentors. Here, teens in New Orleans can develop their digital media and maker skills in music production, video production, graphic design, and more. The space will contain Macs and PCs, Adobe Creative Cloud, a music studio, drawing tablets, a 3D printer, green screen capabilities, an HTC VIVE Virtual Reality System, and more.

Getting There:

The Main Library is easily accessible from the New Orleans Ernest M. Moral Convention Center with many options to choose from. The 16 and 22 buses offer an air conditioned ride with a fair of $1.25 in exact change each way. The Main Library is also a 1.3 mile walk or a quick Lyft, Uber, or taxi ride. Lastly, some of the ALA shuttles are likely to get you close enough for free with just a short walk.

The morning session will include children’s and young adult presentations, while the afternoon session will focus on adult materials. The publishers will provide lunch.

New and prospective YALSA members: start your conference with YALSA 101!

Are you a new or prospective member of the Young Adult Library Services Association? Do you want to learn more about the programs, services, and opportunities that YALSA has to offer? This session is for you! Attend YALSA 101 on Friday, June 22 from 2:30-3:30 pm.

During this “speed-dating style” session, attendees will rotate tables and learn from experienced YALSA members about topics including:

  • making the most of your conference experience
  • applying for awards, grants, scholarships, and stipends
  • getting involved: award committees, strategic work, taskforces, juries, interest groups
  • creating content for YALSA: Programming HQ, YALSA Blog, Hub, Research Journal, and YALS

We will also have prize drawings throughout the session. Kick off your conference experience by networking with YALSA members and learn how the organization can help you!

Off the Books ALA Annual Event: Library Make’N’Shake

If you’re looking for something hands-on to do that isn’t on the conference schedule, check out the Library Make’N’Shake hosted by Historypin, MIT Media Lab, Digital Public Library of America, and others. Drop into the event at The Howlin Wolf on Saturday, June 23 between 10am-5pm. The event will highlight non-profit partnerships with libraries with activities centered around STEAM, fundraising, community engagement, and more. Lunch will be served mid-day with snoballs from the famous Hansen’s to feast on in the afternoon.

Why should library staff and others working with teens attend? You will have the opportunity to connect with potential partners for both teen and intergenerational projects. Historypin (https://www.historypin.org/en/) will be launching a new product, Storybox, that would be a great, interactive tool to engage and empower future “teen historians” or to gather the community across generations to share their stories and local history. MIT Media Lab (https://www.media.mit.edu/) will host hands-on workshops involving the food computer, storytelling with data, and circuit making with circuit stickers.

If you cannot drop into the hands-on event, stop by for happy hour from 5-7 for small bites, networking opportunities and live music featuring the Stooges Brass Band. Teen Services Competencies for Library Staff: Aligning the Teen Services Competencies to Your Work

Do you have questions about how you might do that? Are you wondering how to change job descriptions or policies, or program plans to better align with the Competencies? If you answered “yes” to any of those, or if you simply want to learn more about YALSA’s new Competencies, you’ll want to attend the free “Aligning the Teen Services Competencies to Your Work” session in New Orleans.

The free session is scheduled to take place Friday, June 22, from 1 to 4PM in room 343 of the Morial Convention Center , just prior to the ALA Annual Conference.  During that time participants will hear how library staff are integrating the Competencies into their jobs and have the chance to work with library staff from around the country to take a deep dive into the Competencies and explore how to bring them into every day practice. Participants are invited to come to the session with a program plan, a job description, a policy, a staff and/or program evaluation tool, or another tool and spend time aligning those day-to-day tools to the Competencies.

Explore Libraries at the 2018 ALA Annual Conference

Many of us love to visit other libraries while we are out of town, and there are plenty to visit in New Orleans that are accessible by streetcar or ferry. Streetcar fare is $1.25 for each ride. If you’re paying on the streetcar, you will need exact change. You can also purchase 1-day, 3-day, and 5-day in advance online (https://ecommerce.norta.com/Store), or download the RTA gomobile app (apple & android) and purchase passes from there. A ferry ride is $2.00 each way. Again, you will need exact change or you can purchase an integrated streetcar, bus, and ferry pass on the mobile app for a higher price.

YALSA #alamw18 Board Document #29: Building Stronger Ties with Spectrum Scholars

With direction from the board President Sandra Hughes Hassell, the board has recently set out to explore the possible tangible steps that YALSA can take to better engage current and future Spectrum Scholars. Since 2009 YALSA has sponsored 10 spectrum scholars.

The Spectrum Scholars programs affirms ALA’s commitment to diversity and inclusion by seeking the broadest participation of new generations of racially and ethnically diverse librarians to position ALA to provide leadership in the transformation of libraries and library services.

Board document item #29 Building Stronger Ties with Spectrum Scholars focuses on how to get both current and past Spectrum scholars more involved in YALSA’s activities, and in taking leadership professions in the field. Some of the broad questions that will be explored in this board discussion include:

·       Can we engage current YALSA-sponsored Spectrum Scholars to be mentors to other YALSA members who are aspiring to apply for Spectrum scholars? How do we do this? 

·       How might Spectrum Scholars be engaged in help us implement YALSA’s Organizational Plan, especially EDI related activities, such as our goal of diversifying the membership by 20% over three years? 

·       Across the association industry, what are other organizations doing to support and engage scholarship recipients? 

The board is seeking feedback on item #29 from its members and others interested and in attendance on this important equity and inclusion effort. Thank you in advance for your consideration and input!

YALSA Board #alamw18 Board Doc #28: Expanding Member Engagement

YALSA has been working to expand member engagement and has been discussing a number of ways to do just that.

At the 2016 Annual Conference, the board approved the recommendations outlined in Board Document #25, Evolving Member Engagement Opportunities. The goal of the proposal was to provide members with a wider menu of options for getting involved in the work of YALSA, with a particular focus on creating more short-term, opt-in and virtual opportunities, as recent member surveys indicated that in-person and lengthy commitments (2-3 years) did not suit many members’ needs. Successfully implementing this change to better meet the needs of the membership is critical for YALSA, so a check-in to see how the change has progressed is warranted.

The Board will discuss what proposed next steps came about from the 2016 board document in regards to expanding member engagement #28 and what progress has been made toward them.  Also, there will be related questions for the Board to explore, as this issue continues to be one of importance for the board.

YALSA #alamw18 Board Documents #30 & #32

At Annual 2017, the Board directed the O&B Committee to investigate ways to measure outcomes and make the work of the organization more efficient and effective (board document #29). To that end, Organization & Bylaws is bringing Board Document #30 and Board Document #32 up for discussion at ALA Midwinter 2018.

Board document #30 focuses on YALSA’s existing chair manual and it’s need for updating. As chair of the Organization & Bylaws Committee, Melissa McBride is seeking feedback from the Board to guide the Committee’s work on updating the document. O & B would like to update the Chair manual to:

  • Reflect the Organizational Plan
  • Include more big-picture information
  • Add outcomes focused content
  • Update the virtual resources content
  • Update the selection committee content
  • Expand the responsibilities, communication, ethics and policies sections
  • Change the language of the document so it can be used for Chairs, Conveners and Blogging Team Leads
  • Add turn-key materials, like sample messages as well as examples of completed forms and documents that are thorough and well-written

Organization & Bylaws is also seeking feedback from the Board (document #32) on the role of the YALSA Board Liaisons, including seeing how the role can evolve to support YALSA’s more outcomes focused approach. A Board Liaison is a member of the Board who maintains a critical connection between the Board of Directors and a designated committee, jury, advisory board or task force. Board Liaisons are appointed by the President-Elect and assignments begin annually in July. The primary purpose is to facilitate communication between the Board and appointed member groups. The Board Liaison is the Chair’s primary contact for all governance related issues and supports the Chair with leadership of the appointed group as necessary.
