Day one of YALSA’s Pre-conference on graphic novels and manga was full of great panel discussions and individual presentations including:

  • A panel on manga with Dramacon author Svetlana Chmakova, Yen Press Publishing Director Kurt Hassler, teen librarian Angela Frederick, and teens from Nashville Public Library.
  • Teacher Librarian Stella Farris who talked about what manga is.
  • Keynote speaker author Gene Yang on the invasion of comics in the United States.
  • Peggy Burns, the associate publisher at Drawn & Quarterly on graphic novels for adults – and teens.

The pre-conference ended with a one-on-one interview of author Gene Yang, interviewer was Gregory Lum, on comics in education.
