You’ll notice that this blog and The Hub will be covering a lot of these events–both live and shortly after–so even if you’re not in Dallas you’ll have a chance to participate.

Innovations in Essential Teen Services

This year’s Midwinter Institute offers tips on programming, reader’s advisory, evaluation, homework help and more. This is a ticketed event. The YALSA Blog will be covering this event live!
YA Lit Trivia Night FUNdraiser
8:00 to 10:00pm, Omni, Dallas B Room
Think you know all there is to know about young adult literature and YALSA’s book awards and book lists? Then come show off your knowledge at this event! Cash bar and light refreshments. Donations will be collected at the event for YALSA’s Leadership Endowment, which will fund future leadership-focused efforts, such as student scholarships, mentoring programs, leadership institutes and more. You do not need to register for ALA’s Midwinter Meeting to attend this event. Sign up your team at the YALSA Wiki (teams of ten will have reserved seating).

YALSA Groups Work Session

This is a working meeting for YALSA’s Process Committees, Juries and Taskforces who opt to participate. Not on a committee or other member group? Stop on by and learn what it’s all about. You can join the meeting of a group that interests you, or learn more about YALSA’s publications as member managers and editors circulate in the room. YALSA Trends in YA Presentation
4:00 – 5:30pm, Dallas Convention Center, room C141.
This event will feature a paper presentation from Jeanie Austin called “Critical Issues in Juvenile Detention Center Libraries.” The paper will explore the tensions present in juvenile detention center library services (such as institutional limitations and access to technologies) and how youth and librarians can and do navigate these tensions within the library setting. Ms. Austin is a Certificate of Advanced Study student at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Celebrate Teen Tech Week with a Hack Jam
8:00 – 10:00am, Dallas Convention Center, room D172.
Want to know about a great new way to introduce some next generation tech programming into your library, with a minimal demand on staff? Then participate in this hands-on event to learn how to implement Hackasaurus activities with your teens. Demos will be presented by representatives from the Mozilla Foundation, New York Public Library and local teens from Dallas Public Library, then attendees will get hands-on practice. If you plan on attending, please be sure to bring your laptop (an iPad won’t do) and confirm that it’s running either Firefox, Chrome or Internet Explorer 9. Attendees will also receive a free Library Hacktivity Kit.

Meet and mingle with the candidates who are on the ballot for the 2012 election, including President-Elect, Division Councilor and Board of Directors at Large. Light refreshments and door prizes. Discussion Forum: Answering the Young Adult Reference Question – Making Connections that Matter

Join Rutgers University’s Marie Radford and RUSA RSS past chair Joe Thompson in a discussion about the dynamics of negotiating reference questions with young adults face-to-face and via various technological tools. Open to all ALA attendees. We will also continue the planning for a joint interest group between YALSA and the Reference and User Services Association’s Reference Services Section that will focus on Young Adult Reference Services. Sponsored by the RSS Marketing and Public Relations Committee and cosponsored by YALSA.

Morris & Nonfiction Award Program & Presentation

Come to this free event and help YALSA celebrate the 2012 honorees and winners for the Morris Award and YA Nonfiction Award! Enjoy coffee, tea and danish and listen to the winners and finalists speak about their honored titles. After the speeches, mingle with the authors and pick up free copies of their books.
